When one of the members of Pro Dive Nelson Bay’s Narki Gnome dive club was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, the group wanted to support her and raise awareness for the Breast Cancer Network of Australia (BCNA). Diving was what brought us together, so it was important to hold an event with our own underwater twist.
The BCNA mini-field campaign is held through out October each year, with hundreds of hot pink lady silhouettes placed in prominent positions throughout Australia to represent women affected by breast cancer. Pro Dive’s mini-field is the first ever underwater mini field to be hosted. The hundred silhouettes were placed along the waterline at Fly Point Marine Reserve before high tide. Then approximately 60 divers and snokelers buddied a lady each and took her for a dive or snorkel of and then returned her safely to the shore.
Underwater, the ladies were taken to the sponge ledges to pose for a group shot, then divers took their ladies on more individual tours of the dive site. The photographers absolutely loved their new subject and we are still receiving pictures of the ladies posing with blue groupers, eels, nudibranchs and of course the resident gnomes of the dive site. Following the dive, pink finger buns donated by bakers delight were enjoyed by all. Many lost their hair in head shaving dares while most others had pink hair by the end of the day. There were also many happy raffle winners. First prize was a trip onboard Ocean trek donated by Chris and Pam Norman, the owners of Pro Dive Nelson Bay. Prizes were also donated by Aquanaut and Tusa/ Tabata and PADI. The events of the day and a previous Mary Kay ladies evening raised over $2000 for BCNA.
